"Eggstatic" Morning

After washing Risky on Monday this is how he felt about it on Tuesday afternoon right before Heather's test.

This morning in Intro to Animal Science we dissected and saw the various parts of the egg. Dr. Whitaker was throwing eggs left and right, far and near to people. Some were skilled and caught them and managed to break them. I caught my egg and it didn't break!
My partner Leesa

We found and saw the air sac and inner shell membrane. To see these two parts we had to peel the shell off very carefully.

In the middle there is a white dot, it's kind of faint in the picture, but this white dot, the germinal disk, tells you whether the egg is fertilized or unfertilized.  The germinal disk is the developing embryo. If the egg is fertilized then the white circle will be hollow and look like a cheerio. An unfertilized egg will have a full white circle, like the one below.

Apparently you never have to refrigerate eggs. We were all shocked. Dr. Whitaker said that he never refrigerates his eggs and he turned  out normal. Eggs also don't have an expiration date, but Dr. Whitaker recommended not keeping eggs for more than a year.

  1. Is it a good thing or a bad thing that the horse is lying down? Other than the obvious that he is lying in his messy stall.

  2. Most of the horses at the barn lay down, it's not a bad thing. Sometimes though it can indicate whether or not they are feeling sick.

  3. One of my favorites of a horse lying down was when we walked by he picked up his head and his mouth was full of shavings. It was kind of like he was drooling, but with shavings! It was so funny!
