Totally Different

Monday night last week I had my Japan meeting and we went to the Rig, which is a student run cafe/restaurant. We played the game telephone, in Japanese, and enjoyed drawing on the chalkboard tables that they had. I'm certain that the Japanese have way better drawing skills than most Americans! I was blown away with how well they could draw stuff. It looked as if the photos had come from a cartoon.

Tomoya, in the red sweater, is an exchange student for one year here and is teaching us Japanese. He has amazing English! In the telephone game he taught us "I'm Home." Kathryn then asked how do you say "honey" so that she could say "honey I'm home!" Tomoya and the other Japan students were confused in why we wanted to say that and the significance of honey. We were trying to figure out where they were coming from and asked "if he had a girlfriend would he call her honey?" Tomoya made a disgusted face and asked "why would I call her honey? What does honey mean?" Nate then responded "don't you have pet names for your girlfriend? Like Sweety, Babe, Honey?" Tomoya was so confused and said no. We then proceeded to ask "what would you call your girlfriend then?" Tomoya responded "just by her first name."
Us: If you called her 'honey' what would she do?
Tomoya: She would be confused and upset.
We were all laughing so hard during this conversation.
